February 4 - George A. Romero

Happy Birthday, George A. Romero! Born today in 1940 as George Andrew Romero, this American editor, writer and filmmaker is best known for his series of gruesome and satirical horror films about an imagined zombie apocalypse.

He began this wave by editing and shooting (though going uncredited), co-writing and directing the 1968 American black and white independent horror drama/sci-fi film 'Night of the Living Dead'.

This film is often considered a progenitor of the fictional zombie of modern culture. Over the decades, 'Night of the Living Dead' eventually garnered critical acclaim and is now regarded as a cult classic.

One decade later, Romero edited, wrote and directing the 1978 Italian-American independent zombie horror fantasy/thriller film 'Dawn of the Dead' (also known internationally as 'Zombi' or 'Zombie'). This was the second installment of Romero's Night of the Living Dead series.

Over the decades, 'Night of the Living Dead' eventually garnered critical acclaim. In 1999, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Romero had been active from 1960–2017.
