In 1936, the son of an aristocratic Spanish sherry family, Álvaro Domecq y Díez, began producing Kahlúa® in Veracruz, Mexico.

Ever since its introduction, Kahlúa® has remained the top selling coffee liqueur in the world. It has even earned the place of the second largest single liqueur brand worldwide. Along with its blend of fine Mexican coffee, Kahlúa® also contains a rich mix of corn syrup, vodka, and rum.

The name Kahlúa® carries the meaning, “House of the Acolhua people” in the Veracruz Nahuatl language, which was spoken in the area before the conquest of the Spanish. Kahlúa® became available in the United States only from 1962 onward.

In 1994, the company merged with Allied Lyons forming Allied Domecq. In 2005, Allied Domecq was partially acquired by Pernod Ricard which merged with the Swedish Vin & Sprit (V & S Group) in March of 2008.

The unique flavor of Kahlúa® has made it the most preferred liqueur among drinkers worldwide. Due to this, Kahlúa® is also available in numerous online liquor stores. No wonder this coffee liqueur is the popular choice for making a whole range of cocktails.
