Happy 51st Birthday, Danis Tanović! Born today in 1969, this Bosnian screenwriter and film director is best known for having composed, written and directing the 2001 Bosnian drama/action war film 'Ničija zemlja' ('No Man's Land').
The film follows Ciki (Branko Djuric) and Nino (Rene Bitorajac), a Bosnian and a Serb. Both are soldiers stranded in No Man's Land -- a trench between enemy lines during the Bosnian war.
The two men have no one to trust, no way to escape without getting shot, and a fellow soldier is lying on the trench floor with a spring-loaded bomb set to explode beneath him if he moves. The absurdity of their situation would be comical if it didn't have such dire consequences.
The following year, the film won Tanović a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film at the 59th Golden Globes in late January 2002. Two months later, he won an Oscar for Best International Feature Film at the 74th Academy Awards in late March.
Tanović has been active from 1994–present.
