February 17 - Alejandro Jodorowsky

Happy 91st Birthday, Alejandro Jodorowsky! Born today in 1929 as Alejandro Jodorowsky Prullansky, this Chilean-French artist and filmmaker is best known for his avant-garde film.

He has been "venerated by cult cinema enthusiasts" for his work which "is filled with violently surreal images and a hybrid blend of mysticism and religious provocation".

Since 1948, Jodorowsky has worked as a novelist, screenwriter, a poet, a playwright, an essayist, a film and theater director and producer, an actor, a film editor, a comics writer, a musician and composer, a philosopher, a puppeteer, a mime, a psychologist and psychoanalyst, a draughtsman, a painter, a sculptor, and a spiritual guru.

Jodorowsky is best known for composing, writing, directing and starring in the 1970 Mexican acid Western drama/independent film 'El Topo' ('The Mole'). The film follows the eponymous black-clad gunfighter (Jodorowsky) who embarks on a symbolic quest in an Old West version of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Jodorowsky has been active from 1948–present.
