Happy Birthday, Sergei M. Eisenstein! Born today in 1898 as Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein, this Soviet film theorist and film director was a pioneer in the theory and practice of montage. He is noted in particular for his silent films.
These included the 1925 Soviet silent black and white drama/political drama film 'Stachka' ('Strike', his first full-length feature), the 1925 Soviet silent black and white drama/history film 'Bronenosets Potyomkin' ('Battleship Potemkin') and the 1927 Soviet silent black and white drama/history film 'Oktyabr: Desyat dney kotorye potryasli mir' ('October: Ten Days That Shook the World').
This also included two historical epics: the 1938 Soviet black and white historical drama/action film 'Alexander Nevsky' and the two-part epic 1944 Soviet black and white drama/history film 'Ivan Grozniy I i II' ('Ivan the Terrible: Parts 1 and 2').
On January 22, 2018, a Google Doodle was created in what would have been Eisenstein's 120th birthday. This was in tribute to his pioneering filmmaking technique.
Eisenstein had been active from 1923–1946.
