January 04 - Carlos Saura


Happy 88th Birthday, Carlos Saura! Born today in 1932 as Carlos Saura Atarés, this Spanish photographer, screenwriter and film director, along with Luis Buñuel and Pedro Almodóvar, is counted among the Spain’s three most renowned filmmakers. 

Saura has a long and prolific career that spans over half a century. Several of his films have won many international awards. 


Among his credits, Saura is best known for writing, co-producing and directing the 1976 Spanish drama film ‘Cría Cuervos’ (‘Raise Ravens’).  

The film is an allegorical drama that follows a disturbed but quiet eight-year-old girl named Ana (Ana Torrent) dealing with loss. Later on, Ana and her sisters are  placed with an aunt (Geraldine Chaplin) in Madrid after their father passes during adultery. 

Saura’s film later heralded a turning point in Spain. His politcal and psychological masterpices was shot while Spanish general and dictator Francisco Franco was on laying on his deathbed. 


Highly acclaimed, ‘Cría Cuervos received the Special Jury Prize Award at the 29th Cannes Film Fesitval in May of that same year. 

Saura has been active from 1956–present.
