September 13 - National Kids Take Over The Kitchen Day

 

Happy National Kids Take Over The Kitchen Day! on September 13 brings the youngest cooks into the kitchen! 

Kids and teens across the country are called to take over their kitchens! This observance encourages using their favorite recipes to make a meal for their family.

(Adult supervision and assistance as required for the younger bakers and chefs in the house!) 

The mission of the Young Chefs® Academy (YCA) empowers kids and teens to become more actively involved in the kitchen. They encourage children to help in the planning, preparation, and cooking of meals.  

Another focus of the YCA includes fostering family bonds. As a result of their work, they actively fight the battle against the many serious health and social issues related to youth’s eating habits in today’s time. 

When children take an active part in their family mealtimes, they learn to eat healthier. However, mealtime is also a social activity.  

We learn about each other's days and take an interest in each other's lives. Mealtimes are enormously productive when we work together and enjoy together as families. 

HOW TO OBSERVE 

Let the kids cook for a change of pace. Ask children to take part in the cooking activities more often, too.  

Not only will they learn about cooking and healthy eating, but they will learn about responsibility. They will feel more a part of the family.  

They might even find joy in the meals they help to provide, too! Try one of these kid-friendly recipes to get your children cooking.  

While they whip up their culinary masterpieces, it’s an excellent time to teach them so many things:

  • As they measure ingredients, practice fractions. 

• • Learning to delegate is hard for some and easy for others. While they prep, teach them how to best divide the responsibilities. Don’t forget the clean-up. 

• • Another great cooking skill is reading. Don’t hesitate to let them learn tough phrases, especially in French cooking! 

• • No matter their age, there’s a job for everyone. Even the youngest can pour and taste.

September 13 - National Truck Driver Appreciation Week

 

Happy National Truck Driver Appreciation Week! During the second week in September, America recognizes it as a time to honor any and all professional truck drivers for their hard work in one of the nation’s most demanding and vital jobs.  

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates there are one million professional men and women classified as light delivery or heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers. They not only deliver our goods safely, securely, and on time, they also keep our highways safe. 

We can be thankful for truck drivers and recognize that without them, our table, our closet, and the store would all be empty. Truckers move America forward. 

As of 2015, the industry association says that there are 3.5 million people employed as drivers. The most recent BLS stats show one million (about 950,000). 

Truck drivers have been around since the end of the 19th Century. 

In 1898, Scottish-American bicycle, automobile and diesel engine designer and inventor Alexander Winton invented the semi-trailer in Cleveland, Ohio. He was also an automobile manufacturer who developed the trailer truck as a way to deliver his cars.

  • Truckers deliver about ten billion tons of freight, or about seventy percent of all the freight moved in the United States! 

  • The average trucker will drive over one hundred thousand road miles per year. That works out to nearly forty trips across the United States! 
• • The average age of a truck driver is forty-nine. 
• • About six percent of the nation’s truck drivers are women. The number is trending upward about ten percent a year. 
• • Forty-one percent of the nation’s truck drivers are minorities – compared to twenty-two percent in all other jobs. 
• • Walmart runs one of the largest staff of truckers. The company maintains one of the largest fleet of trucks in the nation and employs 8,600 drivers who earn $88,000/ year according to a CBS News story. 
• • Truck drivers can have many talents. These truckers later went on to be in the film industry: 

• • Sean Connery, Elvis Presley, Charles Bronson, Viggo Mortensen, Liam Neeson, James Cameron, Chevy Chase, and Rock Hudson. 

• • A survey by Atlas® Van Lines found truck drivers are big country western music fans. Nearly half of the truckers on the road listen to country-western music. One third listen to classic rock, and the rest listen to sports or talk radio. 

  • The career field remains open for more heavy and tractor-trailer drivers. The BLS estimates 108,400 more will be needed by 2026.Their median pay is about $43,680 per year. 
• • The career field for Light Truck and Delivery Truck Drivers is expected to grow more slowly. The BLS predicts bout 55,000 light truck and delivery drivers will be needed by 2026. Their median pay is $30,500 per year. 

HOW TO OBSERVE 

 
This week truck stops, trucking industry organizations and others show their appreciation for drivers. They will be offering deals and recognizing truckers for their hard work.  

Know a trucker? Sending a simple thank you card. 

On the road with kids? If they see a truck driver and use the arm-pull signal as though pulling the air horn cord, don’t be surprised if the trucker blasts their horn!
