May 16 - National Piercing Day

Happy National Piercing Day! On May 16, today promotes piercing as well as its history and culture.

While body piercing has had a popular resurgence in recent years, its history dates back to biblical times.

Piercing the lobe of the ear is thought to be the oldest form of body piercing. However, it is by no means the only form of ancient body piercing art.

Not only is it considered artistic expression but in many cultures, piercing holds great meaning in religious ceremonies.

The practice of body piercing also has shown to be an effective medical treatment for some ailments, such as migraines.

Some facial piercings include:

  • • eyebrow – vertical and horizontal

  • • bridge of nose

  • • anti eyebrow or teardrop

  • • nose

  • • septum

  • • Monroe/Madonna

  • • dimple

  • • labret

Body piercing also extends to other parts of the body. From head to toe, humans have been adding jewelry and other decorations by puncturing their skin.

They add chains and other ornamentation as well. The procedures are often painful, though temporarily. With proper care, the wounds heal without infection.

FUN FACTS:

The most pierced man in the world is currently sixty-year-old German Rolf Buchholz. He has over more than 450 piercings in his body! Out of these, more than half, around 278 piercings are on his penis alone.

In 2010, regarding his love of piercings, Buchholz was verified by the Guinness Book of Records™ as the world’s most pierced man.

The most pierced woman in the world is Brazilian Elaine Davidson, according to Guinness World Records™.

When examined by a Guinness World Record™ official in May 2000, Davidson had 462 piercings, with 192 in her face alone! By August 9, 2001, when she was re-examined again, she was found to have 720 piercings!

May 16 - National Barbecue Day

Happy National Barbecue Day! If the mouthwatering aromas wafting down the street haven’t told you, National Day Calendar® will; May 16 is the day to fire up the grill!

The purist in the world of barbecue either uses charcoal, wood, or gas and slow cooks the protein over indirect heat.

While the type of protein and seasonings vary, each part of the country specializes in their own flavors and sauces.

For example, more tangy barbecue with a vinegar base can be found in North Carolina. In contrast, South Carolina leans toward a sweeter sauce. The sauce can be applied thick or thin, giving it more of a glaze.

Turn up the heat by adding spices and peppers. Smoking meat is another way to add flavor and tenderness as well.

Unique ingredients come from ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire, brown sugar, soy, and molasses.

However, you never know what combination of spices a barbecue master has in his or her repertoire. They’ve spent years perfecting their trade.

Pork is the original barbecue meat, but beef, chicken, lamb, and other proteins find their way into barbecue. If you think it’s just about the meat, you’d be wrong.

The sides are just as important when it comes to good barbecue. An ideal coleslaw will pair well with a shredded barbecue pork and make the perfect sandwich.

The macaroni and cheese, potatoes, barbecue baked beans, chips, soft drinks – these are all staples of true barbecue flavors.
