Happy National PrepareAthon!™ Day! On April 30, today reminds us that crises happen suddenly. Being prepared needs to happen now, not later. 

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or wildfires require us to make decisions with little or no warning. Do you have an emergency plan in place with your family in the event of an emergency situation? 

HOW TO OBSERVE 

Have an emergency plan for your family and home. Keep important and valuable papers in one, easy to access location. Plan escape routes for family members and pets. Pre-program emergency numbers into everyone’s phones.  

Create contact lists for family members. Depending on the emergency, you will need spare, accessible cash for things like medicine, clothing, or shelter.

April 30 - National Honesty Day

Happy National Honesty Day! Each year on April 30, this day challenges us to be truthful in all that we say and do. 

We know the different kinds of lies. We’ve spared someone’s feelings or fudged the truth just a little or maybe told an all-out whopper. Unless we walked on water, we’ve all told a lie or two.  

This observance encourages truthfulness. Whether we’re conducting business or speaking with our children, honesty goes a long way toward instilling confidence.  

We all make mistakes. Sometimes, we don’t know the answer or can’t control the outcome of a situation. However, we can control our own actions and words. And we can speak the truth in all we do.

HISTORY 

In 1990, American author M. Hirsh Goldberg wrote The Book of Lies: Schemes, Scams, Fakes, and Frauds that Have Changed the Course of History and Affect Our Daily Lives.  

Goldberg had created National Honesty Day in the early 1990s. The former press secretary to a Maryland governor selected the last day of April in contrast to all the foolishness the first of the month brings.  

This day is often used as a campaign for prevention against the most deceitful lies in history. Occasionally, the day also urges politicians to stay away from lies and tell the truth. 

How can you be honest today? In all honesty, it is the best policy after all.

April 30 - National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day

Happy National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day! On April 30 each year, this day raises awareness for thousands of pets that are waiting for (and needing) adoption from the shelters. 

Animal shelters require year-round assistance and adoption is a part of the process. 

Since animals come in daily, the shelters must work quickly to ensure the animal’s health and well being. Only then can they be adopted into their forever home.  

The day also encourages you to visit a shelter near you and find your new fur baby. Visit with the shelter to consider all the needs the dog or cat requires for the long term. 

If you feel you can’t meet those needs, consider helping in other ways. Give your time by volunteering. 

Not only will this help the shelter by providing the animals with exercise, companionship, and socialization, but it also gives you that wonderful animal love we all so enjoy. 

You can also check the shelter’s donation needs list. Bring the items you are able to give. This will help the shelter animals find their forever homes more quickly. 

HOW TO OBSERVE 

Visit a shelter today and consider adopting. Also, remember to spay and neuter your fur babies. It helps reduce the number of unwanted pets in the population.
