April 19 - National North Dakota Day

Happy National North Dakota Day! Today we observe the 39th state to join the union back on November 2, 1889.

This midwestern U.S. state dominated by the Great Plains. Its eastern city of Fargo showcases Native American and modern art at the Plains Art Museum. The state is also nicknamed The Flickertail State, The Roughrider State, The 701, Heaven and Norse Dakota.

The area's immigrant history is honored at the Scandinavian Heritage Association in the city of Minot. The Great Plains give way to the rugged Badlands near the border with Montana, where Theodore Roosevelt National Park spans the Little Missouri River.

Long before Lewis and Clark traveled up the Missouri River, the Native American Mandan tribe of the Great Plains, the Siouan people, Hidatsa and Arikara (also known as Sahnish, Arikaree or Hundi), arrived in North Dakota.

During the Corps of Discovery, the team camped at Fort Mandan along the Missouri River for the winter. Here, their translators, Lemhi Shoshone woman Sacagawea and French Canadian explorer and trader Toussaint Charbonneau, joined the expedition.

Sacagawea would also give birth to her son, Native American-French Canadian explorer, guide, fur trapper trader, military scout alcalde and gold digger Jean Baptiste Charbonneau.

As the settlement expanded, disputes over land increased. Fort Abraham Lincoln preserves the home of United States Army officer and cavalry commander Gen. George and his wife, American author and public speaker Elizabeth "Libbie" Bacon Custer, the military commissary, blockhouses, and the Mandan Indian Village along the Missouri River.

American statesman, politician, conservationist, naturalist, and writer Theodore Roosevelt arrived in North Dakota in 1883 and fell in love with badlands and outdoor life. He would later be elected the 26th U.S. President and served from 1901 to 1909.

His love of the badlands led to his conservation and preservation efforts. The North Dakota Badlands are named Theodore Roosevelt National Park in his name.

"I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota." ~Theodore Roosevelt

In the heart of the Badlands…

In the heart of the badlands, Medora came to life and today recreates the western life with entertainment in an outdoor amphitheater. Visit the Cowboy Hall of Fame and so much more in Medora.

When statehood crested the horizon, South Dakota was also in line for admission. American politician, lawyer and 23rd U.S.President Benjamin Harrison signed the bills at random, and nothing was recorded indicating which bill was endorsed first.

However, due to alphabetical order, North Dakota is listed as the thirty-ninth state to be admitted to the union.

Beyond historical sites, North Dakota boasts a healthy amount of scenic byways. Kayak down the Pembina Gorge or visit the International Peace Gardens. While you’re there, take a hike into the Turtle Mountains.

Camp at Devil’s Lake or tour any one of the many wineries and vineyards. Visit Sheyenne State Forest and seek out the only waterfall in the state.

Garrison Dam is the fifth largest earthen dam in the world and Lake Sakakawea‘s year-round fishing and recreation is an angler’s dream. At night, the skies reveal stars never seen before, and the Northern Lights dance with delight.

North Dakota is also where National Day Calendar® can #CelebrateEveryDay! As the home of National Day Calendar® in Mandan, North Dakota, it’s their favorite place to be!

April 18 - National Record Store Day™

Happy National Record Store Day™! On this day, owners, employees, and music lovers gather in the place that created a culture of its own.

From vinyl to digital and back to vinyl again, the brick and mortar store celebrates a love of not just the music, but the art of jacket covers, words, and style.

Through a variety of events, record stores across the country and the world hold one day events and promotions.

Even though independent record stores have dwindled in the last decade, around 1,400 still remain in operation in the United States.

Most of those are operating in major metropolitan areas like New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Seattle.

However, other smaller metro areas also cater to vinyl and disc as well.

Think Duluth, Fargo, Des Moines, and Terre Haute. They all have record stores full of classic albums waiting for you to discover your favorite cover.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Visit your favorite record store online and give them a shoutout or buy a gift card to show your support. Afterwards, go home and play your favorite vinyl record find!

Visit the website below to find a record store event near you. Use #NationalRecordStoreDay to share on social media.

HISTORY

Founded in 2007 by a gathering of independent record store owners, the first National Record Store Day™ included Metallica meeting fans at Rasputin Music in San Francisco, California.

April 18 - National Auctioneers Day

Happy National Auctioneers Day! Each year on the third Thursday in April, today recognizes those who hold auctions and take our bids all year long.

According to the National Auctioneers Association, it is estimated nearly a quarter-trillion dollars in goods and services are sold by professional auctioneer’s every year!

Going once! Going twice! SOLD!!

A sales method over two thousand years old, the rhythmic cadence used in The United States is uniquely American.

Thought to have developed during the Civil War, the rapidly punctuated chatter of these auctioneers not only gets the job done but makes it entertaining as well.

Elsewhere in the world, auctioneers take a more sedate approach. Both styles get the bids and sell the items on the auction block to the highest bidder.

Auctioneers provide a service to both the buyer and the seller. They must maintain high standards to stay competitive. These knowledgable business professionals know the products they sell.

They recognize quality and a deal when they see it, too. Auctioneers also provide services in times of great need, as well.

Often, a family needs to sell an estate or land to alleviate debt. An auctioneer provides professional guidance during a difficult time.

Across the country, a variety of auctions platforms take place. Whether auctioneers sell livestock, art, automobiles or surplus, an auction can be found near you. Left to the imagination, just about anything can be put up for auction.

HOW TO OBSEERVE

To celebrate National Auctioneers Day take part in the National Auctioneers Foundation’s (NFA) annual National Auctioneers Day drive.

Share your memories of auctions you’ve attended or give a shoutout to an auctioneer you know. Or simply share your thoughts about auctioneers using #NationalAuctioneersDay on social media.

HISTORY

While the founder of National Auctioneer Day is unknown, according to the National Auctioneers Association (NAA), the observance has been celebrated for over twenty-five years.
