April 15- National Tax Day

2020 tax filing deadline is July 15 for 2019 tax returns due to the impact of COVID-19. 

Happy National Tax Day! On April 15 of each year is the last day to file and send out our taxes.  

In the United States, the term “tax day” refers to the day on which individual income tax returns are due to the federal government. The day may also refer to April 15th for state tax returns. 

The federal income tax filing deadline is midnight on April 15 of every year, with extensions occurring when today lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday. In those circumstances, the returns are due the first succeeding day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday.  

These dates can differ depending on the residence as well. Some years, due to extenuating circumstances such as natural disasters, more significant extensions have been granted by the U.S. Federal Government.

Complete and file your taxes! If you don't, life, for the most part, will eventually become quite taxing indeed. 

Whether you prepare your taxes yourself or have a professional prepare them for you, only a couple of things are certain in life – death, and taxes. Or so Benjamin Franklin once said in the aforementioned adage above.

HISTORY 

In 1862, income tax was first collected in the United States to fund the Civil War.  It was deemed unconstitutional due to not being apportioned with conformity across the states. 

In 1913, the United States once again enacted income tax with the 16th Amendment. At that time, the filing deadline was March 1. In 1918, the deadline was changed to March 15, and then yet again in 1955. 

For the most recent change, the filing deadline was moved up to April 15. The day has now come to be known as National Tax Day.

April 15 - National Titanic Remembrance Day

Happy National Titanic Remembrance Day! Each year on April 15, this day is dedicated to the memory of the lives lost when the British passenger luxury liner R.M.S. Titanic sank into the icy waters of the North Atlantic Ocean back in April 1912.  

We also remember the more than 1,500 people who died that day of the 2,200 passengers onboard. Of these, there were only seven hundred and five survivors (492 passengers and 214 crew). 

Known as the “the unsinkable ship,” the Titanic hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on April 14, 1912, on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City, New York.  

Later, in the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, on April 15, the Titanic sank at 2:20 a.m. Those who perished did so mainly due to an insufficient number of lifeboats onboard the ship. 

There have been a few movies made about this subject as well. Most notably, this includes English film director Roy Ward Baker's two-hour 1958 British black and white drama film 'A Night to Remember'. 

Most recently, this also includes James Cameron's three-hour 1997 American epic romance/drama disaster film 'Titanic', starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack Dawson) and Kate Winslet (Rose DeWitt Bukater). 

As of late, the wreck of the Titanic lies at a depth of about 12,500 feet. It has been sitting on the sea floor, three hundred and seventy miles south-southeast off of the coast of Newfoundland, for one hundred and eight years.

HISTORY 

The day commemorates the date of the Titanic’s sinking in honor of those who lost their lives aboard the Titanic in 1912.  

While each year since its sinking, memorial events dedicated to remembering the tragic loss, no one person or entity has proclaimed the observance.
