March 30 - National Doctors Day

Happy National Doctors Day! On May 30, this day honors any and all of the professionals for their dedication and contributions to society and the community.

It is their dedication that puts the patient first time and again. On National Doctors Day, we say “thank you” to our physicians for all that they do for us and our loved ones.

Healthcare today is more complex than ever. With more advancements, tools and information at their fingertips doctors have an overwhelming job to diagnose and treat their patients every day.

This is the day to honor the men and women who see us three hundred and sixty-five days a year. In every city and hospital, in our military and in our rural communities, doctors pave the way to better healthcare for their patients.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Take the opportunity to thank your physician for responding to late-night phone calls, working long hours and providing unswerving care. Today, more than ever, we know the sacrifices they make to put the health of their communities first.

For our younger followers, National Day Calendar® has created a coloring page and a word puzzle for the day. You can find more activities in the National Day Calendar® Classroom

HISTORY

On March 30, 1933, this was the first observance of Doctors Day in Winder, Georgia.  Dr. Charles B. Almond’s wife, Eudora Brown Almond, wanted to have a day to honor physicians.

On this first day in 1933, greeting cards were mailed and flowers placed on the graves of deceased doctors.  The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors Day.

The first ether anesthetic for surgery was administered by Crawford W. Long, M.D. on March 30, 1842, marking the date for Doctors Day.

On that day, before Dr. Long operated to remove a tumor from a man’s neck, he administered ether anesthesia.  Following surgery, the man would swear that he felt nothing during the surgery and was not aware of anything until he awoke.

On February 21, 1991, 41st U.S. President George H.W. Bush proclaimed National Doctors Day to honor the nation’s physicians for their dedication and leadership.

Today, hundreds of thousands of doctors lead the fight against disease and illness in the United States. They specialize and continue to seek advanced treatments and cures for debilitating conditions.

How can you thank or recognize a doctor today?

March 30 - Warren Beatty

Happy 83rd Birthday, Warren Beatty! Born today in 1937 as Henry Warren Beatty, this American actor, screenwriter, producer and director is best known for his politically charged portrayals of somewhat outcast but charming heroes.

At the start of his career, Beatty co-starred in an episode of the CBS American black and white television sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gills (19591963). The episode was entitled The Best-Dressed Man (S01E02), where Beatty co-starred as a wealthy, well-dressed hunk named Milton Armitage.

On TV Guide's 100 Greatest Episodes of All-Time of June 1997, the episode was ranked at number 64.

As an actor, Beatty is best known for starring in the 1961 American Technicolor period drama/romacne film 'Splendor in the Grass', the 1967 American biographical drama/true crime film 'Bonnie and Clyde' and the 1971 American revisionist Western drama film 'McCabe & Mrs. Miller'.

As a filmmaker, Beatty is best known for co-writing, producing, directing and starring in the 1981 American epic historical romance/drama film 'Reds'.

With a runtime of almost three and a half hours, the film follows American journalist John 'Jack' Reed (Beatty) who journeys to Russia to document the Boleshevik Revolution. Upon doing so, he returns as a revolutionary.

However, his fervor for left-wing politics leads him to Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton), then married, who will become a feminist icon and activist. Politics at home become more complicated as the rift grows between reality and Reed's ideals.

Bryant later takes up with cynical playwright Eugene O'Neill (Jack Nicholson), and Reed returns to Russia, where his health declines.

For 'Reds', the film won three Oscars, including Best Director. This occurred at the 54th Academy Awards in late March 1982.

Throughout his career, Beatty had been nominated for fifteen Academy Awards, including four for Best Actor, four for Best Picture, two for Best Director, three for Original Screenplay, and one for Adapted Screenplay.

Director and collaborator Arthur Penn described Beatty as "the perfect producer", adding, "He makes everyone demand the best of themselves. Warren stays with a picture through editing, mixing and scoring. He plain works harder than anyone else I have ever seen."

Beatty is the younger brother of American film, television, and theater actress, singer, dancer, activist, and author Shirley MacLaine.

Beatty has been active from 1956–present.
