March 11 - Jerry Zucker

Happy 70th Birthday, Jerry Zucker! Born today in 1950 as Jerry G. Zucker, this American screenwriter, film producer and film director is known for his role in directing comedy spoof films. 

Zucker and his older brother, American film director, producer and screenwriter David Zucker, had both collaborated on several features. 

  

Among his credits, Zucker is best known for co-writing and co-directing the 1980 American satirical disaster/parody film 'Airplane!' (alternatively titled 'Flying High!') and also for co-writing the 1988 American comedy crime action/romance film 'The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!'. 

  

Zucker is also known for co-writing and co-directing the 1984 American action comedy/parody film 'Top Secret!' and for directing the 1990 American supernatural romantic fantasy thriller drama/narrative film 'Ghost'. 

The latter was nominated for Best Picture at the 63rd Academy Awards in late March 1991. However, it lost to Kevin Costner's 1990 American epic drama/western film 'Dances with Wolves'.

  

Along with American film director and screenwriter Jim Abrahams, the Zuckers constitute the "ZAZ" team of directors. 

  

Zucker has been active from 1980–present.

March 11 - Raoul Walsh

Happy Birthday, Raoul Walsh! Born today in 1887 as Raoul A. Walsh, this American actor, film director was also a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 

  

Among to his credits, Walsh is best known for directing the following films listed below. 

These included the 1924 American silent black and white swashbuckler drama/fantasy film 'The Thief of Bagdad', the 1932 American pre-Code black and white drama/romantic comedy 'Me and My Gal', the 1941 American black and white drama/thriller heist film 'High Sierra' and the 1949 American black and white film noir drama/crime film 'White Heat'.

Walsh was also the brother of American personality, sportsman and silent screen actor in the early decades of the 20th century George Walsh. Raoul had allowed him to co-star in 'Me and My Gal' as Duke Castenega.

  

Walsh had been active from 1909–1964.

Happy National Pack Your Lunch Day! On March 10, today encourages anyone and everyone across the country to take their lunch to work, school or whereever they’re spending the day. It’s an opportunity to revitalize lunchtime with fresh and healthful meal choices. 

  

Packing your lunch has benefits you may not expect. One of the immediate benefits is savings. Many home-prepared lunches cost less than ordering off the take-out menu or eating out.  

  

Another benefit of making your own lunch is controlling portion sizes and ingredients. By adding fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your lunches, they will be healthier as well. 

  

• • Mickey Mouse was the first licensed character to appear on a lunchbox in 1935. 
• • The 1950 fictional cowboy Hopalong Cassidy (or Hop-along Cassidy) lunchbox was the first lunchbox based on the eponymous hour-long 1952 NBC American black and white western action/adventure television series. 

While some foods pack well for lunch, others don’t fare so well. If you’re new to packing lunches, check out this starter list:

  • Hardboiled egg – provides a serving of protein 

• peeled and placed in a separate container 

• • Fresh vegetables – choose a dipping sauce like ranch or balsamic vinegar 

• • carrots sticks, celery sticks, sliced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes 

• • Whole fruit – apple, orange, banana, grapes, berries 
• • Yogurt – provides a serving of dairy 
• • Salad – prepared with deli meats of your choosing 

• • place dressing in a separate container

• • Nuts 

You will want to include a gel pack to keep your food chilled until lunchtime, even if you’re reheating leftovers.
